Overview
The materials, products and furnishings utilized in building interiors, from their manufacture to their disposal, have a substantial impact on climate change, resource depletion and the waste stream. To address this, the Center for Circularity in Interior Design is dedicated to the incorporation of circular thinking and design in the interior design and related industries to reduce these impacts.
“A Mindset and a Mechanism”
An important aspect of this is advocating for a new industry mindset: viewing our constructed spaces as temporary assemblies of finite materials borrowed from the planet in circular loops by incorporating reused and refurbished materials and products and designing to anticipate their end of use reentry in usage cycles.
The Center will be committed to raising awareness of those impacts and creating resources for interior designers, architects, manufacturers and facilities managers to enable circular design throughout the life of interiors projects.
Mission
To drive the adoption of circular design and decarbonization principles in interior design, reducing climate change and other environmental impacts while advancing design and the industry and opening new economic opportunities.
As defined by the Ellen Macarthur Foundation, the circular economy is based on three principles, driven by design:
Eliminate waste and pollution by designing products, materials, and infrastructure to go back into the economy after their use
Circulate products and materials by maintaining, reusing, and refurbishing them.
Regenerate nature by focusing on improving natural environments and building biodiversity
Vision
A world where all interiors are designed for circularity, maximizing resource efficiency and minimizing waste, and all interior designers integrate circularity into their practices.
